Cropping Solutions Seminar – Narrabri, New South Wales

Engaged by the Board of Crop Consultants AustraliaAlex was appointed for the purpose of delivering a presentation on work health and safety in the context of agronomy and crop consultancy. 

Titled ‘#PlantASeedForSafety‘, Alex spoke about the innate accountability of those in rural industries, about shifting the pendulum away from a traditional, autocratic approach to enabling positive culture change, and about various sector specific challenges including working in isolation, hazardous chemicals and situational awareness.

Official: Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Youth Group

Young Farmer Challenge – Sydney, New South Wales

Engaged by the Royal Agricultural Society Youth Group, Alex served as an Official at the NSW Young Farmer Challenge. The purpose of the Young Farmer Challenge is to showcases the depth of knowledge and technical skills required in agriculture today, and celebrates the involvement of young people in the industry.

Panellist: South Australian Sheep Expo

Adelaide, South Australia

Engaged by the SA Sheep Expo, Alex served on the Expo’s Career Panel with panellists from Thomas Foods International, Landmark, Rabobank and Nitschke Nancarrow Accounting. The purpose of the panel was to share our lived experiences and wide and varied pathways into careers in rural industries

Plenary Speaker: Strategy Road

Healthy Australian Agribusiness 2020+ – Adelaide, South Australia

Engaged by the Founder of the Strategy Road Swarm, Alex was appointed to deliver a dynamic, ten-minute ‘TED-talk’ on work health and safety in rural industries. 

Titled ‘#PlantASeedForSafety‘, Alex spoke about the need to shift the pendulum from penalties, policies and paperwork, to ‘planting a seed for safety’, and to thinking differently about what good work health and safety really looks like in the context of rural industries.

Keynote Speaker: Rural Media South Australia (SA)

Breakfast Meeting – Adelaide, South Australia

Engaged by the President of Rural Media SA, Alex was appointed to deliver a presentation on work health and safety on farms. 

Titled ‘#PlantASeedForSafety (and #SaveALifeListenToYourWife!)‘, Alex spoke about the fact that ‘compliance’ has become a dirty word, and that in order to support safer outcomes, the broader social network needs to re-orientate it’s messaging from ‘doom and gloom’ to support and encouragement.

Funded by West Coast Youth & Community Services and engaged by Mentally Fit EP, this community event was held in support of those experiencing hard times during drought.

Titled Drought sucks! (But your health, safety and wellbeing doesn’t have to.), Alex spoke about her family’s experience with drought and work-related illness, the role of social influence in making better choices and redefining what it means to be a resilient rural Australia.

Master of Ceremonies & Keynote Speaker: AgriFutures

Rural Women’s Award Announcement – Adelaide, South Australia

Engaged by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions of South Australia, Alex was appointed as both the Master of Ceremonies and as a keynote speaker for the announcement of the South Australian 2019 AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award.

Titled ‘Just be yourself’, Alex spoke of her experience as the winner of the 2018 Award, the power of authenticity and learning to be ‘okay’ when people don’t laugh at her jokes.

Plenary Speaker: Pursehouse Rural Pty Ltd & AGnVet Rural Pty Ltd

Annual Conference – Newcastle, New South Wales

Engaged by Pursehouse Rural Pty Ltd, Alex was appointed for the purpose of delivering a presentation on health and wellbeing, in addition to facilitating a short workshop that sought to identify what the work-related barriers were to the adoption of healthier choices.

Titled ‘Investing in health and wellbeing’, Alex’s spoke about the broader social context of health and wellbeing in rural industries, the importance of psychological safety, and the need to recognise health and wellbeing not as a risk – but as an opportunity – to bolster the sustainability of your business, to enhance a culture of care and to improve the health and wellbeing of people in rural industries.

Engaged by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions of South Australia, Alex served on an interview panel with respective panellists from AgriFutures, Westpac Agribusiness and Piper Alderman, for the purpose of selecting the 2019 South Australian AgriFutures Rural Woman of the Year.

Engaged by the Executive Officer of the Australian Fertiliser Services Association (SA), Alex was appointed for the purpose of delivering a presentation on work health and safety in the context of the fertiliser services industry, and small business. 

Titled ‘#PlantASeedForSafety‘, Alex spoke about the need to shift the pendulum from penalties, policies and paperwork, to ‘planting a seed for safety’; to amplifying what’s already working well within industry, and taking practical, meaningful action… that could actually save a life.

Keynote Speaker: District Council of Franklin Harbour

Australia Day Breakfast – Cowell, South Australia

Engaged by the Chief Executive Officer, Alex was given the honour of delivering an inspirational speech to the drought-stricken community of the District of Franklin Harbour, at Cowell’s 2019 Australia Day celebrations. 

Underpinned by personal narrative, Alex spoke about the irrefutable strength of rural communities, the importance of celebrating the journey to date and the need to redefine what it means to be a ‘resilient rural Australian’.

Master of Ceremonies & Keynote Speaker: TrialSafe

TrialSafe Seminar – Adelaide, South Australia

Engaged by the Founder of TrialSafe (and Director of local agribusiness, AgXtra), Alex served as both the Master of Ceremonies and a keynote speaker at TrialSafe’s inaugural seminar.

Established for the purpose of promoting safe and considerate conduct in the agricultural research industry‘, Alex’s keynote presentation spoke of the current climate of work health and safety in agriculture, the fact that ‘compliance’ has become a dirty word, and the opportunities the agricultural research industry has to learn from the mistakes of other industries, and circumnavigate what has typically been a long and arduous process of culture change.

Hart Field Day – Hart, South Australia

Engaged by the Hart Field-Site Group Board, Alex was appointed to deliver a presentation on work health and safety in the context of broad acre cropping and small family business.

Titled ‘Practicality over paperwork (not your average farm safety session!)‘, Alex spoke about the fact that ‘compliance’ has become a dirty word, that small businesses already know what good work health and safety looks like, and that the key to reducing the number of people hurt in agriculture isn’t anything to do with record keeping… but in taking practical, meaningful action that could actually save a life.

Engaged by one of the Safety Institute of Australia‘s state-based event convenors, Alex was the Master of Ceremonies for a seminar featuring a keynote presentation from SafeWork SA’s Executive Director, Martyn Campbell.

Engaged by an ABARES Senior Economist, Alex was appointed to deliver a presentation on work health and safety on farms. 

Titled ‘#PlantASeedForSafety‘, Alex spoke about the need to shift the pendulum from penalties, policies and paperwork, to ‘planting a seed for safety’; and taking practical, meaningful action… that could actually save a life.

Keynote Speaker & Plenary Speaker: Public Health Association of Australia

Annual FarmSafe Australia Conference: Innovative, Safe & Healthy – Townsville, Queensland

Engaged by the Associate Professor and Chairman of FarmSafe Australia Incorporated, Alex was appointed to deliver a keynote presentation on work health and safety in agriculture, and a plenary presentation on women in agriculture. 

During her keynote presentation, Alex discussed the current climate of work health and safety in agriculture, the challenges associated with applying a corporate approach to improving industry work health and safety, and the various opportunities within the agriculture industry to adopt the learnings from current safety research. 

Upon speaking about women in agriculture, Alex emphasised the necessity to unlock the consciousness, curiosity and confidence of rural women in their capacity to influence change.

Keynote Speaker: Premier's Reception

Royal Adelaide Show – Adelaide, South Australia

Engaged by the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, Alex was appointed to deliver a keynote presentation on her experience as youth in agriculture. 

During her presentation, titled ‘A seat at your table‘; Alex recounted her personal and professional journey to where she is today, in addition to emphasising the importance of harnessing the energy, knowledge, views and opinions of young people; and in turn, bolstering the sustainability of the agriculture industry.

Plenary Speaker: Thriving Women

Bi-Annual Conference – Hahndorf, South Australia

Engaged by the Thriving Women‘s Conference Committee, Alex was appointed to deliver a plenary presentation on the role of rural women in influencing improvements to farm safety. 

Titled ‘Farm safety – engagement for change‘, Alex discussed the unique and necessary position of influence that rural women hold within their businesses, their communities and their home lives; the need to focus on taking practical, meaningful steps for improvement; and to turn up the volume on what’s already working well within the industry.

Panellist: Safety Institute of Australia (SIA)

Women in Safety Network Launch – Adelaide, South Australia

Engaged by one of the SIA‘s state-based event convenors, Alex was engaged to contribute to a panel which sought to promote the SIA’s focus on gender equity, thought leadership and research (via the Women In Safety and Health Network), and consequently provide women with access to more-experienced Mentors.

Plenary: Agricultural Bureau of South Australia

Spirit of Excellence in Agriculture Awards – Adelaide, South Australia

In light of Alex’s acquisition of the 2014 Agricultural Bureau Rural Youth Bursary, Alex was engaged to present the preliminary findings of her Bursary project. 

Titled ‘Exploring the context of best practice of work health and safety in the fishing industry‘ and based on her observations of both the South Australian and Norwegian commercial fishing industries, Alex discussed the various challenges and opportunities to improve the culture of work health and safety in the South Australian commercial fishing industry.
